I remember the exact time because I was stuck in a budget review meeting when my phone started buzzing. Three missed calls from the plant floor supervisor. When I finally stepped out, the message was short: "Vision line is down. Product going out mislabeled."

Nine pallets. Already wrapped and staged for shipment.

That was the moment I stopped thinking about the money I'd saved on that vision sensor and started counting what it was actually costing us.

My Job Is to Question the Price Tag

For context: I'm a procurement manager at a 300-person packaging company. I've managed our automation and inspection budget—roughly $280,000 annually—for six years, and I've negotiated with more vendors than I care to count. My default assumption is that the cheaper option is the smarter one, if the specs match.

When we decided to upgrade our inspection line, I did what I always do. I pulled quotes from six vendors, compared specs side by side, and built a cost comparison spreadsheet. What I'd Tell Anyone Shopping for Vision Systems

I've been doing procurement for a long time, and I still fell into the trap of comparing line items instead of outcomes. If you're evaluating vision systems—from Cognex or anyone else—here's what I'd say:

Ask about support before you ask about price. A vision system isn't a hose clamp. It's a software-driven piece of equipment that will fail, need tuning, or need to adapt when your packaging changes. If the vendor can't show you their support process—response times, escalation paths, spare parts availability—walk away.

Run a pilot on your own line, not their demo bench. The vendor's demo environment looks great because they control all the variables. Your production floor won't. A two-week pilot with your product, your lighting, your line speed will tell you more than a month of datasheets.

Build a TCO model that includes downtime. Don't just compare dollar figures. Calculate what a 20-minute line stoppage costs you, multiply by the expected false reject rate, and add that to the sticker price. I promise you the picture changes.

And one more thing: think about what your inspection station says to your customers. When a buyer asks about your QC process, you want to talk about a system that catches defects—not one that has an "almost caught it" story. The output of your inspection line is part of your brand. I didn't believe that until I saw a customer's face when we explained we'd shipped them a bad batch because of a sensor we chose to save money.

Still Kicking Myself

I still think about that first budget sensor and the money it cost us. If I'd asked the right questions from the start—about false reject rates, support response times, and total cost across the system's life—we'd have saved roughly $40,000 across those first three quarters.

My budget spreadsheet doesn't have a column for "factory floor trust," but it should. The plant manager doesn't say much about the Cognex systems now, and that's exactly the point. A quality inspection system isn't supposed to make headlines. It's supposed to make the line run.

When your inspection process is unreliable, your customers notice. When it's solid, nobody says a thing. That silence is the metric I'm most proud of.
